By Second Lieutenant Édouard April, 35 CER public affairs representative
The Thanksgiving long weekend was a busy one for 35 Combat Engineer Regiment troops, who were deployed on a defensive operations exercise at Valcartier. The intent of the 35 CER commanding officer was clear and precise: to reinvigorate the troops’ warrior spirit while recreating a realistic tactical operation context in preparation for Area Concentration Noble Guerrier 2008.
In spite of the autumnal weather, which persisted throughout the training, the 35 CER engineer squadron stayed true to form and did not bow to cold or fatigue. It quickly became apparent to enemy reconnaissance that the unflagging vigilance of the troops would prevent the enemy from penetrating their lines. The enemy nevertheless attacked them continuously, launching constant harassment operations and requiring troops to react spontaneously and effectively. In addition, reconnaissance patrols were led by each of the section commanders of troops 1 and 2 so that they could develop their leadership skills and forge cohesive bonds between the members of the newly formed sections. The weekend closed on a high note when the sappers put their military engineering skills to use, detonating blocks of C-4 explosives in the aim of discouraging the enemy from carrying out a massive offensive attack.
This exercise was greeted with enthusiasm and there were high expectations for its success. The support that 35 CER received from its attachés was greatly appreciated and did not go unnoticed. The kindness of 55 Cdn Svc Bn, which provided us with an astonishing range of vehicles and delicious hot meals throughout the weekend, was greatly appreciated, as was the support of the members of 55 Fd Amb, who were present to respond in the event that medical assistance was required. In addition, the support of 713 Communication Regiment and the exceptional morale of all personnel contributed to the undeniable success of the training exercise.
