Chief Warrant Officer Steve Manny was born on 17 August 1961 in Notre-Dame des Laurentides, a suburb of Quebec City. After finishing secondary school in Quebec City, he enlisted in the Canadian Forces on 28 February 1979. He received his basic training and was posted to 5e Régiment d’Artillerie Légère du Canada at Valcartier in June 1979.

He spent the next five years with the regiment. In 1980 he was deployed as part of X Battery on a UN mission to Cyprus as a young gunner. He received an accelerated promotion to the rank of Master Bombardier in October 1981, and worked as a gun detachment member, an observation-post driver–signaler and the gun detachment 2IC.

He was then transferred to the Canadian Forces Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, where he worked from June 1984 to June 1987 as an instructor on the basic recruit training courses. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in May 1985.

In June 1987, he was posted to the Royal Canadian Artillery Battle School at Shilo, Manitoba, as a PL3 instructor.

In June 1990, he returned to 5e Régiment d’Artillerie Légère du Canada, where he was the section 2IC for R Battery. He participated, among other things, in Operation Salon during the Oka Crisis.

He was transferred yet again in July 1991, this time to the Field Artillery School at Gagetown, New Brunswick, where he worked on the Assistant Instructor-in-Gunnery course. He was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer in May 1992. Following this, he stayed on at the school as an instructor for the officer phases and the Instructor-in-Gunnery (IG) course.

In July 1997, he was posted to 5 RALC, where he was the regimental command post Technical Warrant Officer.

From September 1999 to March 2000, he participated in the Op Toucan mission in East Timor, during which he was posted to Australia.

In June 2000, he was the Sergeant Major of Q Battery. He was promoted to the rank of Master Warrant Officer in February 2002. In March 2002, he was deployed to Bosnia with Q Battery as part of Op Palladium Roto 10.

In June 2003, he became the Sergeant Major of the Headquarters and Services Battery. He held this position until February 2005.

On 15 February 2005, he was transferred to 5 ASG as Sergeant Major of Valcartier Garrison.

He was promoted to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer on 1 June 2007, and was transferred to Ottawa as career manager of the Royal Canadian Artillery School.

After 30 years of service in the Regular Force, CWO Manny decided to retire on 13 June 2008.

After taking a well-deserved break, he joined the Reserve Force, becoming Regimental Sergeant Major of 6 Field Regiment at Lévis, Quebec, on 13 December 2008. He still holds this position.
