Search Help

The Army News Search is a simple search engine that seeks out words or phrases in stories in the Army News database. It will search a story’s headline, teaser, project number, article body or transcript.

Here are some examples of what our search engine can do:

Parts of words

• armour will return articles or videos that have the characters "armour" in any word. This means that it will return stories that contain "armour" or "armoured" somewhere in the story.

Spaces

• armoured vehicle will return any story that has either "armoured" or "vehicle" in the story. All spaces between search words are interpreted as "or."

And

• armoured and vehicle will return any story that has both "armoured" and "vehicle" in the story.

Exact phrases

• "armoured vehicle" will return any story that has "armoured vehicle" together in the story. Quotation marks denote that the string is to be taken as an exact phrase.

Combining search queries

• "armoured vehicle" and women will return any story that has both "armoured vehicle" as an exact phrase and the word women somewhere in the story.

• "armoured vehicle" and "army budget" narrows the search further by returning any story with both "armoured vehicle" and "army budget" as exact phrases.

• "armoured vehicle" or "army budget" broadens the search by returning stories containing either the phrase "armoured vehicle" or "army budget". "armoured vehicle" "army budget" will return the same thing because the space between the two sets of phrases act as an "or" operator.

Search engine limitations

If you searched for a phrase, such as "armoured vehicle," that only exists in the headline in addition to a phrase like "army budget" that only exists in the article body (in other words, your search would be "armoured vehicle" and "army budget"), the search will return nothing. The search engine will not search these two different sources at the same time.

Also, if your search is "armoured vehicle" and "army budget," it will only return stories that contain those two phrases, and it won’t return the stories that may have "armoured vehicle" or "army budget", and then sort them by relevance.

You may also notice that the total number of articles can change depending on the filtering options, and the reasons why this happens may not always be obvious. For example, if you've chosen to browse all videos but then sorted them by episode, the total number of videos will drop. This is because not all of our videos were used in episodes. Similarly, searching for project numbers may yield fewer stories because many older stories do not have project numbers.
