Chief Warrant Officer Eric Decubber was born in Ghent, Belgium, on 31 December 1960. In March 1983, he enlisted in the Canadian Forces at the Recruiting Centre in Sherbrooke as a field engineer in Construction Engineering.

After completing his recruit courses at Canadian Forces Base Saint-Jean, Quebec, working briefly at CFB Kingston and travelling to Canadian Forces Station Alert, he was transferred to CFB Chilliwack, British Columbia, in January 1984 to finish his QL3 training as a stationary engineer. He was then stationed at CFB Ottawa from 1984 to 1987, during which time he was promoted to corporal. From 1987 to 1989, he worked at CFS Holberg, British Columbia. He returned to CFB Ottawa and was promoted to master corporal in 1990, then to sergeant in 1992 during a six­month stint at CFS Alert. In 1993, he was transferred to CFB Goose Bay, where he was promoted to warrant officer in 1996, after which he was transferred to Edmonton Garrison. In 2000, he was promoted to master warrant officer and transferred to Montreal Garrison, where he worked as assistant to the facilities manager and RSM of the Engineering Branch at 5 ASG. Master Warrant Officer Eric Decubber retired from the Regular Force in June 2005 and moved to Weedon, Quebec, to take over the family farm. He joined the Sherbrooke Hussars on 27 April 2007.
